We gave our today

At 11am on the 11th November, we all took a moment out of the hustle and bustle of yet another busy school day to hear The Last Post solemnly play over our tannoy system. I, like much of the world at that time, paused to think about what humans in history have personally forfeited in order to help each other. Individuals, societies and whole countries have proven time and time again that human beings have immense capacity for compassion and in moments of need, will overcome differences, unite for the greater good and self-sacrifice in order to do what is right.

“When you go home, tell them of us and say, for their tomorrow we gave our today.”

John Maxwell Edmonds

Reading this evocative epitaph, what would you be willing to give up to protect tomorrow?

I am not expecting your answers to be something along the lines of picking up your spears, learning a war cry or selling your worldly possessions! But I do know that we are already united in a common responsibility to ensure the next generation have a world to inherit. One with wild, free animals, dense and thriving rainforests, immense and rich oceans, clean air and vast uninterrupted views; a world full of natural wonder.

With our new Sustainable Promise at DESS the children and teachers are committed to giving things up, changing their habits and doing the right thing for the greater good. Here is our promise:

We promise to look after our planet, to change our habits and take responsibility for the size of our footprint on the natural world.

You can see this displayed on the giant green feet at the front of school. We hope you will join us in our metaphoric battle to change our habits. You can also follow us on Twitter: @DESSCares to stay up to date with what we are doing across DESSC to fight for tomorrow.

Before I sign-off and leave you to enjoy this week’s newsletter, DESS wishes you, your families and the UAE a Happy National Day; as a community we are grateful that 48 years ago the 6 leaders came together to form this proud country; a superb example of the success found when people unite for the greater good.

Best wishes,

Rebecca Eldred
