“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it’s the only thing that ever has”. Margaret Mead

This is a quote Mrs McGrogan, (who is leading Sustainability at DESS this year) shared with me recently while explaining her vision for how DESS, albeit only 1 school, can have a real impact on our planet. We all know the scale of change needed seems to most of us like an impossible task but, if everyone does something, it should add up to a lot.

We now have a sense of urgency in regard to changing our practices. Everyone at DESS believes we owe it to our children to show them that we, the adults, at least tried to protect what will be their planet. We want our DESS children in twenty years time to look back and be proud of what we, as a community, did to change our ways. Currently, children all over the world are protesting for change and as a school we want to take responsibility for our actions and their consequences.

Soon, we will be sharing our Sustainable Vision and we urge our whole community to join us in our mission. Together we will do something.  We will show our children that we want to protect the planet for them and show what a small group of committed, thoughtful citizens can really do.

A few initiatives we have thought of are:

  • No single use plastic bottles in the DESS Café – already achieved!
  • Removing the paper cups from our drinking fountains
  • No more plastic packaging in lunchboxes
  • No more disposable cups for coffee in the cafe

It is going to be a year of discomfort in many respects, as individuals work out solutions to problems.  Problems like how to carry shopping without a plastic bag; how to get a coffee if you don’t have a reusable cup of your own or how to engage with paperwork without printing it.  Hopefully though there will also be some easier problems, such as, how to drink without a straw!

To celebrate some of our thoughtful committed citizens here at DESS, our staff stars of the week are Mr Waseem Al Nseirat and Mrs Dudu McMurren.
