My trip to Mount Everest
Many congratulations to Dilan Gauba (5O) who climbed to Everest base camp earlier this month.
Please find below his account of the amazing adventure – congratulations Dilan, we are very proud of your exceptional achievement.
During the holidays, I was fortunate to experience the climb of a lifetime; I climbed Mount Everest! My father organised it and we were part of a group. We all shared the common aim of reaching Base Camp and in doing so, raising money for charity. My preparation for this involved lots of training and climbing the staircase in my apartment building with a full backpack on!
We flew to Kathmandu and then we had to travel by helicopter to start our trek. I have never worn so many layers of clothing! The climb to reach Base Camp took 8 days, at times it was difficult and I found the second day really challenging due to the distance we covered. When we actually reached Base Camp, it felt amazing that I had achieved my goal and persevered – even when I found it tricky.
Not only did we raise money (around $5000) for the Himalayan Children’s Charity, I also got to meet some of the children. I was surprised to see so many children who are orphans and I felt proud to be able to help them. The charity gave me an award in recognition of what I had achieved; it’s something I will remember forever.
This whole experience has made me realise that giving up is not an option and you should always keep trying, even when times are difficult.
