DESS Dominate At The DC 7s & Irish National Open Diving Championships

Saturday morning saw an early start for the DESS Under 11 Rugby team who took part in the annual Dubai College 7s Rugby Tournament.  The tournament saw the top rugby schools in Dubai competing to claim the title of Dubai’s Best Primary School 7s team.  The morning got off to a nervous start with 3 of the squad ruled out through illnesss, including our co-captain, Archie. (However, it was great to see him still come along to cheer the team on!).

The DESS team started strong with a win over Nord Anglia (33-5) and then backed it up with back to back wins against Kings Dubai (51-10) and JESS Ranches (39-5) to finish top of the pool.  The semi-finals saw them take on a club side, Tigers who were made up of players from a wide range of schools.  A physical approach from the forwards (Werner, Noah, Tristan, Kamal) paid dividends, as it allowed the DESS speedy backs (Faolin, Reinier, Oli, Ali, Taran, William) to run in some superb tries, including a try scored by our Year 5 super-sub William. The final score was 33-15 to DESS which saw them take on Kings Dubai again in the final, after they defeated JESS Jumeriah 32-12.

In the cup final, DESS were once again too physical for Kings, with Werner scoring within the first minute.  From there DESS never took the foot off the gas, to run out convincing winners 42-5.  A fantastic team performance from the boys which the parents and coaches were all extremely proud of.  We now look ahead to the 10-a-side league starting in Term 2 and hopefully repeating the performance at the DC 10s!

Well done boys!

2019 Irish National Open Diving Championships

Afia Blessing (4O) and Owen Whitbread (5R) successfully competed in the 2019 Irish Open Diving Championship last week. Afia was the youngest diver at this high-level competition. Both Owen and Afia competed against divers from all over the world and scored the highest individual scores ever.  Afia came 4th in the skills event and narrowly missed out on a medal.  Well done to Owen for securing a silver medal in his event.

We are very proud of their accomplishments.
