All about Books!

What an exciting mini Lit-Fest Week we’ve had at DESS!

On Sunday 3rd March 2019, Mrs. Ammoury accompanied the winners of the DESS Library’s Wimpy Kid Challenge to see the famous children’s author Jeff Kinney at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature.

Then on Monday 4th March, two fantastic, intrepid teams of our best readers competed in the hotly-contested final for the Literature Festival’s Reader’s Cup. It was the first time that DESS had successfully reached the final from 600 competing schools and we are very proud to say that both teams achieved a top 20 ranking.

So on Wednesday 6th March, we were really honoured to be chosen by the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature to host Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler, top, international authors of the Defender of the Realm trilogy. The children loved the animated and sensational presentation. The dynamic duo entertained the KS2 children for an hour in the Hall, explaining their journey towards becoming successful script-writers and authors, before spending time with each year-group for a Q&A session in the Library.

It has also been non-stop excitement in the DESS Library with the two frenzied competitions relating to our visiting authors: ‘Who will find the Crown Jewels?’ and ‘Coin Collector’. KS2 students joined forces to compete for a chance to win a Defender of the Realm book.

Then on Thursday 7th March, DESS children and staff dressed as their favourite book character to celebrate World Book Day. As part of the festivities, some of our budding poets entertained us at Poet’s Corner and we also hosted local radio presenter, talented magician and newly-published author, Magic Phil. We were very lucky to be the first school in Dubai to have Phil present his new book ‘The Dog that Loves Blue’ to the FS and KS1 classes.

The busy, exciting week will be rounded off by an invitation for our Dance Squad to perform as part of the Fringe events at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature on Friday 8th March.

We look forward to seeing you there.
